Cosmetic 360 – Stand LA24:

Nexdot presents Uvltimate, the ultimate solution for UV protection of fragrance and cosmetics formulas

23 October 2024

Nexdot, a company specializing in applications based on Quantum-dots research (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023), presents its Uvltimate range of varnishes at Cosmetic 360, the international innovation trade show for the cosmetics and perfume industry in Paris.

Nominated for an award in the packaging category, this transparent varnish, applied to the outside of bottles, blocks ultra-violet radiation with unprecedented effectiveness, without impacting the transparency or color of the material.

The UV fragility of many active molecules used in products is a major constraint for the cosmetics and perfumery industries. To avoid rapid degradation and changes to olfactory and colorimetric properties, they require the addition of additives that make formulations more complex, and whose impact on health and the environment is poorly understood.

At a time when consumers are increasingly aware and informed about these issues, Uvltimate varnishes remove a major obstacle on the road to “Clean Beauty”.

Perfect protection for simplified formulas

A major innovation, Uvltimate varnishes are based on mineral nano-crystals. These Quantum-dots enable the transmission and absorption of light rays to be fine-tuned according to wavelength. This means they can stop all UV rays (A, B and C) before they reach the contents of the treated bottle.

The blocking power of Uvltimate varnishes is such that many additives designed to protect and stabilize UV-sensitive molecules can be eliminated from formulas.

This allows formulators to create without constraint, while reducing the list of ingredients in their products. By retaining only the essentials, this simplified formula not only reassures consumers, but also reduces the risk of impact on the business in the event of possible regulation of an additive.

Perfect control of filtering, transparency and color, for customized varnishes

« Thanks to over 10 years of advanced research into the synthesis and properties of Quantum Boxes, we are able to tailor our varnishes precisely to a formulator’s specific requirements. Light radiation can be blocked over a wide or narrow range of wavelengths, depending on the particular fragility of the ingredients.», explains Benoit Dubertret, founder of Nexdot.

While Uvltimate varnishes are perfectly transparent by default, it is also possible to give them a very pure color, again thanks to Quantum-dots, which will magnify the product’s appearance.

A ready-to-use solution

Uvltimate varnishes have already been successfully implemented in an industrial setting, in partnership with a major glassmaker specializing in bottles for the perfume and luxury goods industry, whose production plant is in France. This ensures easy integration into the manufacturing processes of most players in the perfume and cosmetics industry.

About Nexdot

Nexdot was founded in 2010 on the initiative of Maurice Guillou (ex DGA of Spie batignolles) and Benoit Dubertret (Director of Research at CNRS), to develop industrial applications in France based on the results of Dubertret’s fundamental research into Quantum-dots, or quantum-boxes.In 14 years, Nexdot, whose laboratory and pilot lines are based in Romainville, has filed over 40 patent families, and successfully explored several fields of application for these nanocrystals.
